let's travel north

darel!

Darel Valley is one of the lesser-known but culturally and geographically rich valleys in Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Located southwest of Chilas and bordering Kohistan District (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Darel is known for its rugged mountains, thick forests, alpine pastures, and flowing rivers. Unlike the well-commercialized tourist spots in GB, Darel remains raw, traditional, and largely untouched by mass tourism.

The people of Darel speak Shina and are known for their strong cultural values, tribal codes, and hospitality. The valley has immense potential for eco-tourism, trekking, and cultural exploration, though it remains underdeveloped in terms of infrastructure.

Routes to DArel

Darel Valley is accessible by road from Chilas, the main town of Diamer District, via a rugged jeep track that branches off the Karakoram Highway (KKH) near Thor Nullah or near the town of Thak Das. From Islamabad, travelers follow the KKH north toward Chilas (about 12–14 hours drive). From Chilas, it takes approximately 3 to 5 hours by 4×4 vehicle to reach central parts of Darel Valley, depending on road conditions. The roads are not paved and can be narrow and steep, especially after rainfall. In summer months, the valley is more accessible, while in winter heavy snowfall in the upper areas may block access to certain villages. Because of its remote location and conservative tribal customs, it’s advised to travel with a local guide or fixer, especially for non-locals. There is currently no air access or public transport directly to Darel — all travel is overland via private jeeps or local shared vehicles.
