let's travel north

diamer!

Diamer is one of the most significant and strategic districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, often called the “Gateway to the North” because it is the first district you enter after crossing into GB via the Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Its administrative capital is Chilas, a hot, dry town along the Indus River.

Diamer is famous for its historical importance, Buddhist rock carvings, and access to Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) — the 9th highest mountain in the world. The district is a melting pot of cultures, with people speaking Shina and other regional dialects.

Routes to Diamer

Diamer District is the main entry point into Gilgit-Baltistan from the south and is easily accessible via the Karakoram Highway (KKH). Travelers from Islamabad can drive north through Abbottabad, Mansehra, Besham, and Dasu, eventually reaching Chilas, the administrative center of Diamer. This road journey covers approximately 460–500 km and takes about 12 to 14 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. Alternatively, visitors can fly to Gilgit Airport and drive southward to Chilas (3–4 hours). For those visiting Fairy Meadows, the main route involves driving to Raikot Bridge on the KKH, then taking a 4×4 jeep track to Tattu Village, followed by a 2–3 hour hike. While Chilas itself is dry and rocky, the upper valleys like Fairy Meadows offer cool climates and stunning alpine views. Note: In winter, landslides and snow can temporarily block parts of KKH near Diamer, so summer travel is recommended for better access.
