Tangir Valley is a mountainous, remote, and culturally rich valley in the southwestern part of Diamer District, Gilgit-Baltistan. It shares borders with Darel Valley to the north and Kohistan District (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) to the south and west. Known for its dramatic terrain, river-cut gorges, alpine pastures, and strong tribal traditions, Tangir is one of the least-explored regions in the region, offering untouched beauty and deep cultural heritage.
The name Tangir (or Tinger) refers both to the valley and its main river, which flows into the Indus River near Thak Das on the Karakoram Highway (KKH). The people of Tangir are mostly Shina-speaking and follow conservative traditions, rooted in tribal codes and communal decision-making.
Routes to tinger
Tangir Valley (Tinger) is accessed from the Karakoram Highway (KKH) near Thak Das, about 40–50 km south of Chilas city in Diamer District. From Islamabad, travelers drive along the KKH through Abbottabad, Besham, and Dasu, reaching Chilas in approximately 12–14 hours. Just south of Chilas, a turnoff leads to Tangir Road, which follows the Tangir River deep into the valley. The road is partially paved but rugged, requiring a 4×4 vehicle beyond the initial section. The journey from KKH to central Tangir villages takes around 3 to 5 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. The route is especially scenic in summer, with pine-covered hills, waterfalls, and riverside views. However, in winter, upper areas may be inaccessible due to snow or landslides. Tangir remains mostly disconnected from mainstream tourism, so travelers are advised to plan with local contacts or guides, and foreign tourists may require NOC (No Objection Certificate) due to proximity to tribal and border-sensitive zones.
